Long Kimono Dressy/Causal-Silver/Gold

How many modern kimonos do you have? I’ll have to admit that until this past January, I had zero. When these easy to wear pieces (and I think just a little Boho) first started showing up about three years ago, I decided to let the trend pass. But now, I’m wondering if this trend is starting to be a closet staple. They are fun to wear, easy to style and can add a little panache to your style.

My New Kimono

My kimono today, is perfect for summer. Although it’s full length, it is also very light (almost a chiffon) and seems to float in the breeze.

My friend and What to Wear boutique owner Debby gave it to me to see if I liked it and how I would style it. On my own, I don’t know if I would have picked this particular piece. I guess Debby knows something that I don’t, because I absolutely love it!

I’ve divided the styling into two parts; casual and dressy. With both, I’m using one of my favorite techniques when I want something to really stand out and that is solid column dressing. With my casual look, I went with a white column and for dressy it was black.

Silver and Gold

I wonder if most people have a preference for silver or gold jewelry? I really don’t and it depends on what I’m wearing. I was once told that with my  skin tone, I should  wear silver. Sorry, I like my gold too. Today, I’m playing around  with both silver and gold accessories to see what kind of vibe they each give my look. With the variations, I have four inspirations.

Taking It Casual With White

A pair of white American Eagle jeggings (they are new this summer) anchors my white casual look.  I added a thrifted knitted white camisole on top.

Adding Silver
whitesilver
I originally bought my silver sandals five years ago for my daughter Rachelle’s wedding reception. I just couldn’t see myself dancing in tall heels!

My Karen Scott silver sandals were pulled out this spring from hibernation. Since their rediscovery, I have been wearing them quite a lot. I had forgotten how comfy they are and everyone needs a pair of super-comfortable sandals!

My other silver accessories are second hand. I love chain belts and I found this vintage silver one on eBay. My Stella and Dot necklace and Brighton bracelet (were also found on eBay).

I discovered with Brighton that you have to look carefully, because there’s also a brand called Brighton Beach that looks like the real thing but isn’t. Some things just come with copy cats.

My silver Michael Kors bag is from The RealReal.  I found large bags (and I did try a few) just didn’t look proportionally right with the longer Kimono length. So I decided, long Kimono-smaller bag.

Adding Gold
whitegold
I just love the color coral and decided to take a chance using it with the pink (coral does have a bit of orange in it). The coral and gold necklace worked much better when I put it against white fabric rather than my skin tone. As far as the sandals, they are a dusty tone of coral which lets them blend better with the pink in the komono. Sometimes you just have to experiment with color.

For my second casual variation, I am exchanging the silver for gold as well as a little coral color and straw. I also exchanged my camisole for a white polyester shell that is a good twenty years old (it’s been a staple under suits).

Nothing says summer better than straw and wicker and I sneak them in whenever I can. This vintage Rodo straw has been on here many times during the last four years.

My sources for my accessories are; the Stella and Dot necklace is again from eBay as is my vintage straw Rodo bag. The Elizabeth Cole ram head bracelet is from Poshmark and my thin gold belt was thrifted. The Enzo Angiolini sandals are very  old but bought new once upon a time.

Going Dressy With Black

My black jumpsuit, which I am using for my black column today was found on Poshmark. It  has been a closet staple for these past three years and even  got its own post. And I have to admit, although I will probably wear the white column styling more, this one is my favorite.

It seems I had a bit of luck when I found my jumpsuit on Poshmark because there don’t seem to be to many on there at the moment. However, Macy’s has some fantastic samples in black.

Fabric Makes a Difference

This particular jumpsuit is made from a polyester crêpe, a slightly textured matte fabric.

“Crêpe, commonly spelled crepe, is a luxurious fabric that was traditionally made from silk, but can now can be made from almost any fiber. Crepe types vary from thin and lightweight to thick and heavyweight. Most crepe fabrics have a beautiful drape and are popular for evening gowns and suiting.”

Yes, it likes it dressy.

Adding Silver
blacksilver
Oh these shoes! They were my first pair of really high heels. I got them right after I retired because I figured that I finally had enough time to practice walking in them. I also wore them as the Mother of the Bride. Now you can understand why I needed the silver Karen Scott sandals to dance in. Walking and dancing are two different things in my book!

All silver accessories used were sourced second hand. The Stella & Dot Alexandria Bib necklace was found on eBay (exact one here) as was my vintage Koret bag and Badgley & Mischka heels. My little silver mesh and metal belt was thrifted.

Adding Gold

blackgold

With the change to gold, I am featuring two pieces of jewelry by Kansas
City designer Ngan Vuong. Her pieces feature semi-precious stones and are standouts. My necklace and ring are no different.

My white semi-circle wicker bag is one of my vintage Rodos. The raw silk gold Ralph Lauren wedges were picked up, of all places, Tuesday Morning a few years ago. They have made a rare appearance here and there over the years.

Lastly, is my brass/old gold chain link belt. Around ten years ago, I became nostalgic about a chain link belt that I had as a teenager in the 60’s. Of course, it had been long lost but I wanted one again. I remember that it took me about a month of hunting, but finally this one popped up on eBay and I grabbed it. By the Limited, it reminds me of something you would see in a Pre-Raphaelite painting. I use to wear it a lot but seem to have let it languish in the closet for a few years. It’s time to rediscover it and see how I can style it with some of my current clothes.

Wrapping it up

And I think that’s it up for this lady and her kimono. So to sum it up…

I’ve finally have started using modern kimonos and hope they stick around for a while because they are really fun. Are you like, me quite a late comer or got on the kimono trend early on? Do you just not like them and have no desire to wear one? I would really like to know.

I know that most of you can’t run down to Debby’s, What to Wear, on the central square in county seat Butler, Missouri (about 50 miles south of Kansas City). The good news is that you can find kimonos everywhere, especially on line; eBay, Amazon and department stores all have selections and you can find about any style you want.

Also, this post, as most of mine do, drives home that I just don’t have a problem buying second hand. It’s just the way I operate and I so love a good hunt!

Take care and stay safe.

Michael and I are still having to be very careful here in Missouri and I think we will have to continue doing so for a very long time. I’m about to make us some more masks (waiting for my fabric from ETSY) because I now consider them an essential wardrobe accessory.

Collecting Vintage Rodo Handbags

Do you collect anything? Most of us probably have collected items to celebrate or favorite holidays but do you have a collection that reflects something that you personally like?

A group of blogging buddies and I have created posts today about things we have collected. You need to check out Justine’s of The Tea Check Blog amazing little cigarette boxes (among other collections) that she has collected on her travels.  These speak to my designer art teacher’s heart. Also, Peabody, of You Can Always Start Now, talks about how her angel collection started and what it means to her. I hope you take the time to go over and check their blogs out.

My Collection (well, one of them, at least)

I have the typical ordinary collections such as lipsticks, shoes and jewelry. But there is one collection that I have been a little passionate about and that is my vintage Rodo handbags. I haven’t added anything new in a couple of years but once in a while I still go window shopping.

This is working collection. I use these bags in everyday life and especially on the blog. I went through my four years of posts and picked out a few of my favorite photos. I limited it to a dozen examples, which is probably a lot. But believe me, I could have had twice that.

Rodocollection
Just a few-there was only so much room on the chair. My collection has 24 pieces.

A Little Background on Rodo Handbags

Still a luxury Italian bag maker, Rodo was founded in 1956 by Romualdo Dori. He first started designing and producing  wicker and straw handbags, typical of Florence fashion. Soon, the line expanded into bags for every need.

A Working Collection

As I mentioned earlier, these bags just don’t sit on the shelf. They are used by me along with my two daughters. Generally, I get a text that says, “Here’s what I’m wearing-what do you have that goes?” and I usually do.

To The Blog & Instagram We Go

The best way to show off my vintage collection is to show how I style with them. This shows that older bags with character and quality and be made relevant in a modern setting. Let’s get started…

From one of my current posts Black &White & Striped All Over

This black and white tote is one of my favorites because the hardware is so fantastic. But if you look closely at all these bags, you notice that the majority of them have amazing hardware details that you just don’t find on today’s bags.

And Galas. This shell bag is my all time favorite, so much so that I have it in two colors. When I upgraded my iPhone a few years ago, I took this bag bag with me. My phone had to fit in this bag. Needless to say, I didn’t get the biggest phone. Smart phones are one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to smaller vintage bags.

As I mention at the beginning,  Rodo is still going strong. New bags range from $500-$1000. But their older bags can be had for very reasonable prices on eBay or Poshmark.

This impromptu post is in the bag. Until yesterday, I had no idea I was going to write a post. I’ve just joined the blogger support group SIPB on Facebook and discovered they had been planning for members to blog about collecting and the due date was today!

I had wanted to create a post about Rodo handbags for a long time so decided to just buckle down and do it.

That all I have for today. Do you collect anything that is dear and near to your heart? I would love to know.

nameI have only found these bags on second hand online shops so here’s a list.

A List to most of the on line  second hand shops that I know about.

My Sew-Sew Life/Living On the Selvages

Starting at the Very Beginning

One of my favorite projects in all my years of teaching K-12 Art was a “Design a Kimono” unit that I developed for my 5th graders. Among the reference materials that I put together were vintage kimono fabric pieces that I found on eBay. It was important to me that my students could see and feel silk fabrics first hand.

After I retired, the samples got stashed with my fabric collection (comes with the territory if you sew or knit). But it was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to do something with them.

fulv1
Going a tad dressy with blush cork wedges and a vintage Rodo bag. This might be something I could wear to a symphony when we ever get to go back.

Three years ago, I also bought three yards of Raw Silk also known as Silk Noil from Dharma Trading Company, a fiber art supply company that has been around since 1969. Finally, last July, I came up with the idea of combining my silk noil with one of my samples.

Patterns & Fabric Decisions

Patterns

Having vintage kimono material, I was leaning toward a looser type style that looked Asian inspired. The problem was that I only had about 1/3rd yard of light green vintage kimono silk with stylized flowers, creating a focal point but not much else.

collection
Once retired, I started collecting silk scraps here and there. I found this photo on my phone from last summer when I was still in my planning stage. My green fabric has the big red arrow pointing to it. This isn’t the first time I’ve used vintage kimono scraps. About two years ago, CLICK HERE –> I published a post about a refashion that I did of an old cropped J Jill jacket, in which I added multiple vintage kimono prints to.

Two patterns from my stash worked with my idea: Simplicity S0300 for the pants and Vogue 1437 for the top.

Simplicity S0300 was discontinued when I discovered it a couple of years ago. Luckily, I found it on eBay. It’s in one of their AmazingFit patterns and comes in two leg widths. Another important feature is that it has versions for different body types.  I’ve made pants for both my daughter and I from it. I really like this pattern. You can still find a copy of it here and there on ETSY.

IMG_8597
Daughter Rachelle at her last summer in her Simplicity S0300 pants. She loves the pockets!

Vogue 1437 is a Ralph Rucci three piece suit pattern. Unfortunately, if seems that Vogue has dropped all Ralph Rucci patterns from it’s collection. That’s so sad. But, of course, for a price you can find it on ETSY.

Making the Patterns Fit

The first change that I made to the top pattern was to add bust darts. This is something I do  because I find that woven tops look much better on me when I have darts. Pattern companies, for the most part, stopped putting darts in their patterns years ago, so it’s a pattern drafting skill I’ve learn.

I didn’t make any major changes the pants pattern. I picked the version for my body shape and made a muslin (practice copy) to work out any fit problems.

Where To Put the Silk?

The top pattern design already had a back yoke, making it perfect for my vintage silk. I then cut a matching front yoke. I could put one of the flower designs on one side went with a solid green background on the other; saving the second cluster for the back yoke.

I divided the back yolk into three sections in order to center the second flower cluster pattern. It was that or not use it at all.

New Techniques

Using selvages in My Sewing

IMG_1408 My first technique inspiration came from an article in the now deceased Vogue Pattern Magazine. In “Selvage Smarts”, Linda Turner Griepentrog discussed the history and possibilities of using selvages in sewing. My raw silk had a wonderful fringed selvage and I decided to incorporated it along the edges. Carefully cutting the selvages off and sewing them in the seams was time consuming. But it was fun and I love the special look it gives my top, especially how it acts as a frame around the flowers on the back yoke.

backyolk
A good photo of the exact colors in the silk

Using Nylon Tricot For Seam Bindings

The second new technique that I used was one that I saw on a Threads video. Daryl Lancaster demonstrates how to apply a lightweight and bulk-free seam finish, using bias-cut nylon tricot binding in 15-denier. I usually use French seams (and did on some in places on the top), but for some parts of my top I wanted a much thinner seam finish but one that was encased.

tricotedging
Binding some seams with nylon tricot and using self bias around the armholes

The right weight of tricot was a bit hard to locate, but I found it at Uptown Fabric on ETSY. I bought some in white and ivory,  I’ve not bought anything else from Uptown Fabric but they have a good rating and I need to get back there and seriously look around.

There might be one problem with tricot, however. I think it would melt at higher iron temperatures, so I don’t know it I would use this technique on a 100% cotton or linen fabric. Knowing me, I would probably do a little damage

Finishing It Up

Making the Ties Special

Wanting to use as much of my silk as possible so there would be none wasted, I made the end of my ties silk just one of those little elegance touch.

ties

There were also ties on the inside but they were just left alone

frenchseamsandtie

Under It All

I thought the raw silk was a bit on the thinner side for pants but at the same time, I wanted them to be summer friendly. I decided to line them just to a boxer short length. I just used some 100% cotton from the stash. This has worked out great. They have been comfy in warmer weather but I haven’t had to worry about seeing lines or anything underneath.

Last Thoughts

Honestly, I didn’t know what to think last summer when I looked myself in the mirror with these two pieces on. When you create something there is always that question of it turning out as great as that vision in you mind’s eye.

greensilk
Yes, I love the pockets too! I can pair the pants with a dark green silk tunic that I’ve had since 1995. This is the first time that I’ve tied it in the front and left it hanging in the back.

My creation isn’t trendy, colorful and certainly not a showstopper. I was having a difficult time putting it in a category (but is that even necessary, I wonder). Was it, leisure, dressy or casual? Could I wear it to my favorite wine bar? Did I even like the total look? My daughter Michelle took one look and loved it and told me I was crazy for even having doubts so I decided to sit on it for a few months.

The whole idea of what I did fits with my basic fashion philosophy: up-cycle and refashion when I can and try to have the least waste (there were only a few scraps left of each fabric when I was finished) when I make something.

Today, I like it. It fits my current lifestyle. It has a very calming spirit about it and after this Covid-19 mess is behind us, I can’t wait to wear it and put it on Instagram; “my slightly inspired Asian up-cycled creation”.

That wraps up today’s post. If you don’t sew, thanks for bearing with me. Sewing and knitting are just a big part about who I am and I have to post about them once in a while. But for now, here’s some more photos from last summer of me wearing my pants and silk top out and about.

One last view of the two pieces together along with straw wedges and a vintage straw Rodo bag. Looking at this last photo, I’m thinking this outfit just might have a ’40’s pajama vibe going on. What do you think?

I have, among other things, links to forty independent pattern companies. Their designs have skill levels to absolute beginner to intermediate. And I like the idea of supporting individual makers.

White Jeans-6 Different Ways

Styling My New Pair of American Eagle Jeans

White denim jeans are, for me, one of the quintessential harbingers of warm weather ahead and winter in the rear view mirror. I usually have a least one pair of white jeans lying around somewhere and tend to keep them for a very long time. This spring, realizing that my current pair is ten years old, it was time to look for something new.

I headed over to my favorite jean brand, American Eagle (more about why this is so later), and snapped up a pair of white high-rise skinnies on sale.

Why I Like White Jeans

Why do I like white jeans (or white pants for that matter) so much? White is such a clean and modern color. I don’t care for pure white in a room setting, but love the spark in combination with other colors. White can take something older and make it look new and modern.

My Self Challenge

I settled on three different styling ideas; floral, color block and geometric prints to combine with my white jeans. Each print (or solid) was tried out with a color idea and then answered with a neutral idea (mainly blacks), which means I have six different ideas to share today.

With the exception of an older cardigan, all the tops used today have been sourced second hand either at thrift shops or online resale stores. So let’s get started…

Florals

Floral in Violet

newfloralview

When I spied this semi-sheer Liz Claiborne blouse at Goodwill I was attracted to its floral pattern and color. I thought the blouse style itself, was rather old lady looking and decided, if nothing else, I could cut it up and use it in some restyle. I’m rather fond of doing that (HERE). A year later, the blouse was still hanging around unused in my closet!

I solved “my old lady look” by adding a cami under the shirt and leaving it unbuttoned. This gave me room to add an statement piece necklace.

Tucking the blouse in the front also helps give it a new vibe too. I recommend trying different ways to tuck things in; you can take something a little dated look modern.

Besides the necklace, I dded a white Rebecca Minkoff MAC bag and a pair of silver sandals. Have you tried silver with white?  I am attracted to how silver looks with white and plan to combine more of it together this summer.

Floral in Black and Grey

blackfloral

It was love at first sight when I saw this sheer Cabi blouse on Poshmark (there’s plenty of cool Cabi stuff there). The large abstract cabbage rose pattern is just my stylistic cup of tea. And the ruffles (see the next photo)!

Again, I used a cami with my blouse; this time in black. I think the layered look is more interesting than the blouse by itself. I also created a high/low look by tying the shirt in front and letting it hang long in the back.

Finishing off this casual look is silver jewelry, a black woven Eric Javit’s bag (same on the RealReal)) and my trusty pair of Moda black peep-toe wedges. Mine are eight years old but I found the exact same pair in a size 10 on eBay!

floralcloseup
Had to add a close-up of this blouse-there’s also soft pleats on the collar.
Color Block

The color block styles are a bit dressier than the others. Solid colors can look casual, it just depends on what style type is chosen for the top.

colorblock

First up is an older coral cardigan with small rhinestone buttons. I always think they are crying to have pearls with them and I happily oblige. Finishing out the look are a pair of blush sling-back shoes (very old) and a floral bag that I picked up on Poshmark last summer.

I usually wear this cardi with my black linen pants. I love the way the color pops against the white.

blackblock

When I saw this vintage Ann Klein blouse at the thrift shop, I snapped it up. Its only problem was a worst for wear gold button on the top band. After I found a new button, it looks brand new. And I like hanging it out straight.

I do have new shoes on. My favorite black wedge sandals from ’05 finally fell apart last summer and I replaced them with these Marc Fisher’s from DSW just last month. The second hand black patent clutch was from eBay.

Geometrics

redstripes

Now, I’m going to a total dressed down look. I made this tunic in 2016 from Burda Style’s June magazine for July the 4th . However, for today, I left out the blue accessories. My sneakers are Keds triple wall. I have loved Keds since I was a child and am so happy that they are adding so many cool looks to their modern line. Also, I added my vacation staple “horse feed bag” by Coach.

newgeometricpolka

Lastly, is my newest top, which I featured on my last post with my striped cardi. It is second hand and I found it on eBay. I pulled a little of the top through a front belt loop to give it a asymmetrical look. This answers the back, which is two curved pieces.

I’m finishing like I started, with silver accessories. My bag is a vintage Koret (also eBay).

BackPolka
The pretty back
Why American Eagle For Me?

I probably have a few things in common with my youngest Grandson Harrison and I know that one of them is shopping at American Eagle!

Harrison, would dress head to toe in American Eagle (all he wanted for Christmas was American Eagle gift cards). For me though, it’s the jeans. They fit me better than any other brand.

I will admit, most of American Eagle is geared toward the very young. But a good fitting jean is a good fitting jean and for my money American Eagle is the one. Their jeans regularly sell for $50, but I get them on sale for  $30. My daughter Michelle also wears them, so American Eagle is definitely a multi generational thing in this family.

Another reason that Michelle and I like American Eagle is an ethical one. Do you remember the Rana Plaza disaster? It happened on April 24th, 2013. One of the outcomes of that terrible event was the Bangladesh Accord.

“The Accord is an independent, legally binding agreement between brands and trade unions to work towards a safe and healthy garment and textile industry in Bangladesh. The Accord covers factories producing Ready-Made Garments (RMG) and at the option of signatory companies, home textiles and fabric & knit accessories.”

American Eagle was one of the few American Retail businesses to sign the original 2013 accord. This has always meant something to us.

I think that pretty much wraps up today’s ideas for white jeans. I hope you’ve enjoyed it.

Are you familiar with American Eagle? Have you always thought they were just for the younger set? What brand of jeans fits you the best? I always love to hear from all of you.

I hope my playing around with my white jeans will inspire you to take a look inside your closet and see what you can combine for a refreshing new look. I love the feeling when I find a great combination that was always there but I just never thought about it; so much fun!

It was a long post, I know but white jeans are that versatile! Thanks for reading it.

Well, take care everyone, especially in these trying times.

Here’s to better days. This was taken on the 4th, 2016

Black and White and Striped All Over

During the middle ages, clothing with stripes signified bad. Illustrations then of Judas, lepers, heretics, and the devil often revealed them wearing striped clothing. People who dared to wear “the devil’s cloth,” might be harassed or even murdered. Eventually, clothing with stripes came to identify criminals and prostitutes, the lower levels of society. Finally, during more recent centuries, stripes were elevated so that the aristocracy could readily identify domestic servants.

Thus, stripes have had a rough road to respectability. The big break came during the American and French revolutions against the aristocracy. Stripes came to be associated with revolution, freedom, and democracy.

By now, I don’t think it is bad for me and you to like and wear clothing with stripes. Black and white stripes (along with navy and white) have always been one of my favorite patterns. For today, I have a dramatic black and white stripped jacket/wrap that inspired five different styles.

A Wrap with Stripes

My Ronnie Salloway wrap is designed with contrasting patterns of black and white stripes. Important to me, this piece pairs up with much that I have already in my closet, which is one of my checks before I make a purchase (or agree to take on a piece for review).

The wrap is from What To Wear, our boutique in Butler, Missouri. Knowing my style, Debbie (owner) wanted to see what I could do with it and I jumped at the challenge!

Polka Dots

rnag

I kept thinking that stripes contrasted against polka dots would look great. This idea led to a search on resale sites for a top that would complete the vision in my head. I finally found my “like new” second hand top by INC. (Macy’s in house brand) top on eBay.

Finishing off the look are black skinny jeans, black open toes booties, a black and white Rebecca Minkoff Love bag and my Brighton locket. Before we went into Covid-19 lock down, I wore this for an evening eating with friends. I hope eventually to wear this combination many more times.

A brief aside on jeans: I recommend anything American Eagle. Their fit is excellent, prices are good, and they are members of the Bangladesh Accord which, to me as a consumer, is fair and just arrangement for the garment makers.

Just a Little Straw

straw

Around 2005, wide-legged cropped pants were very much the thing. I’m thankful I didn’t get rid of this pair by The Limited that I picked up at TJ Maxx all those years ago. They’re back! And I love how they completed this spring look along with my white Tee Shirt, which is made of super soft Modal.

I pulled out some more oldies for this style: a Jason Wu Target clutch (2012) and a pair of Moda peep-toe wedges, also purchased in 2012. I think it’s refreshing when a new piece can pull such old items from my closet and breathe new life in them.

Turquoise Love

finalwhitecolumn

One of my favorite colors to mix with black and white has always been turquoise and all other colors of blue. None of my three blue/turquoise accessories matches each other perfectly, but, well, such is life.

The stripes and blues didn’t need competition so I used a white column underneath. Matching whites has its challenges. Cool whites tend to make warm whites look dingy. I knew I wanted to use my old pair of white pants and finally settled on a white thrifted knitted top.

You could really mix any accessory color. I’m thinking green might be fun.

What I’m using for this look: a second hand Stella and Dot Necklace, second hand Tod sandals, and a Coach bag.

sideview

Here’s a side view to show the contrast of the stripes.

Silk and White

silkpants

Again, I am using a black column (this idea shows up a lot on the blog). This time I used two silk pieces: on an old black silk shell and a fairly new pair of Nicolle Miller silk trousers found on sale on her site last fall.

For fun, I pulled out as many white accessories as I thought might go: Adrianne Vittidinni sandals, a vintage Rodo bag, and a white and gold necklace. This is a bit dressier, perhaps something to wear in early summer and on cooler summer nights.

What do you think? Are the white sandals too much?

Stripes on Stripes + Colorful Jeans

red

I’m finishing with a dressed down look. I picked red jeans but you could sub another color, of course. Also for fun, I wanted to play stripes against stripes. Continuing the casual theme are a pair of black slip-ons (pre-covid I was wearing the soles off these shoes) and my favorite black cross-body bag. (Some like jewelry, I gravitate toward bags).

tohappy
Here’s to better and safer times. This night, Debby (owner of What To Wear) and I did a “girl friend” thing and planned to both wear Polka Dots.

Wrap with stripes details. I am wearing a size medium. The back measurement is 19” but the front panels are 28”, which makes it wonderfully drapy. The fabric is a 95% Viscose and 5% Spandex stretch knit which makes the fit comfortable and for this type of wrap, I would say true to size.

Now comes the really neat part. As I mentioned before, the wrap is from my friend’s Debbie’s shop, What To Wear, on the square in Butler, Missouri. Like most shops, she is closed down for the duration of this plague upon us.

However, we came up with a plan. There are still three of the wraps on the racks, two larges and one small, just waiting to make their new owners happy.

Debbie has a special for my readers. If you mention you read about this jacket on Meadowtree Style, the price is only $39.00 (quite a discount from the original price) and shipping is free (USA).

What To Wear is very active on Facebook. Just message Debbie there and she will work personally with you to get your jacket off to you. She is one incredible lady and you will love working with her. I hope this will bring some sunshine and good vibes during this challenging time for all of us.

That’s almost it….

I found the social history of stripes to be a so interesting I was tempted to learn more. This led me to The Devil’s Cloth: A History of Stripes by Michel Pastoureau. This slim book is scholarly but readable–even though translated from the French. For me, it was a fascinating  study of the social evolution of this simple pattern.

Well, I sincerely hope all of you are weathering this trying time. Michael and I are trying our best to venture out only when necessary. We try to get up with our chickens and use the senior hours at grocery stores. May you and loved ones stay safe.

At the end of my days, I’ve been tired from: creating soups from what we have on hand, knitting a sweater with yarns I just love, relocating over 200 surprise Lilly bulbs, baking breads, watching too much HBO and Acorn TV, doing puzzles on my I-Pad, playing challenges on Covet Fashion (a game), and watching way too many cute dog and cat videos on Facebook.

We did get two weighted hula hoops from Amazon. For me, it was just like getting back on that bike. But, Michael, let’s say, teaching him how to “hula” has been hilarious.

Yesterday, I participated in an on-line watercolor course from the Kansas City Art Institute. For the instructor, it was a new way of presenting; I liked it. Teachers are having to be innovative and creative during this stressful time. Even before I retired (2012), educators were learning more on how to use technology.

Again, may you and loved ones stay safe. What are all of you up to? How are you adjusting to the stress? XOXO

Some Great Slacks

I know I’ve made a wise buy if I have so many phone pix of me wearing it that we don’t have to get out the camera for a photo shoot.

This usually means the wise buy goes with tons of things already in my closet. As you may know, I really like items that are versatile. These Leopard slacks are just such an item (from What To Wear on the county seat square in Butler, Missouri, about 50 miles south of Kansas City).

After reviewing a snow leopard top last fall for Covered Perfectly, I’ve been wanting more snow leopard. These slacks fit the bill. The print is smaller with black, white and a grey that has a hint of green tone. They have a fabric content of 75% rayon, 22% nylon and 3% spandex–a wonderful combination in my book. With a wide waistband, they slip on easily and are quite comfortable to wear. I’m going to show five ways I’ve worn them, starting with a Saturday night at the symphony.

asymphony
Simple but a little dressy: I added a vintage pre-loved black-cropped Juliana Collezione (eBay), which has great buttons and a satin collar. A Rebecca Minkoff Leo clutch, Marc Fisher flats and a silver and mother of pearl neck-piece finish the special evening look.

debbyWJ

Out to dinner with friends, I added a silver metallic knit top (had it so long, can’t remember where I got it) and a close fitting thrifted Ann Taylor jacket. Of the looks I’m presenting today, this is my favorite because of the Stella & Dot pearl necklace. (Currently, there are pages of Stella & Dot jewelry listed on eBay.)

On my feet again are my Marc Fisher flats. Oh, how I wish they would keep these shoes in their lineup. I would buy another pair.

With me in this picture is Debby, my friend and owner of What To Wear. We both chose to wear animal prints that night. Animal prints are trending toward the bright this spring. Debbie is embracing that and I think it looks great on her.

When filling in for the elementary secretary, I kept things simple:

elementaryoffice
My ¾ sleeve silk/wool black sweater has been a staple for about a dozen years now. Adding silver and pearl jewelry (and my black flats) rounded out my easy and comfortable outfit for my working day.

Versatile for another working day:

DuoVera
For working in the library, I added my old “Simply Vera” cardi/shrug. This type of wrap must be an educator’s thing because the elementary principal and an elementary teacher came by wearing theirs in various weights and colors.

Finishing the mix was simple black wrapped top, Nine West smoking flats, and my Stella & Dot Alexandria necklace.

After I got home, I started playing with my “Vera” and came up with the idea on the right.

And finally, what I wore just a couple days ago to our Missouri Retired Teachers Association meeting:

lastprint
I paired the slacks with a black DKNY black blazer (Macy’s), my thrifted white top that has tucks going down the front and back (one of my most used tops), and silver studded grey suede smoking loafers by Rebecca Minkoff. I also added a necklace designed by another retired art teacher.

These slacks have turned out to be one of the most versatile and comfortable that I own. I really like the smaller printed pattern, which lends itself to an array of styles, from casual to dressy. I also find the smaller print appeals to friends who would never think about wearing a large animal print. Unfortunately, when I went on line to try to find a similar pair, I pretty much came up empty handed. It seems the spring styles are featuring large and less subtle printed patterns.

One Perfect Top

Hmmm…when a new top grabs me, I have questions. Do I like it enough to wear for a few years? How many ways can I wear it with what I already have in my closet? Well made/designed well? What’s the texture…how does the fabric feel? Does it compliment my body?

I don’t usually ask if it’s going to make me look like I’m about five pounds thinner. But that is what Covered Perfectly’s Wrap Over Top seems to do for me. So I am pretty enthusiastic about this terrific top.

Pauline has ingeniously combined the right elements to create one of the most flattering tops in my closet. The Wrap Over Top has a elongated length that is finished off with a wide ruched band at the bottom. That along with the cross over wrapped front works to thin and lengthened the torso. The blouson effect over the band also hides the tummy area perfectly. This top is magic!

Details

Given that I’m a natural color lover, I picked my Wrap-Over Top in the Ivory. It also comes in blue, purple (Love, Love, Love!) and black.

It is sized generously but I still ordered mine in large and am very happy with the fit. The sizes come in S-2XL, so a size for most everyone.

The Wrap-Over Top is 96% Micromodal and 6% Spandex. Pauline makes all of her garments in the United States. But the super soft, luxurious MicroModal® comes from Austria. It is a completely natural material made from European beechwood. The composition makes it a breathable fabric and just feels absolutely luxurious. The people who produce Micromodal claim that it is made in an ecologically sustainable way.

Styling

I’ve styled my top four different ways, two with skirts and two with pants.

withcheetahskirt1
I’ve combined my Cross-Over top with Covered Perfectly’s A-Line Cheetah print skirt (now on sale) and will be wearing this combo from Spring to Fall. Other additions are a Anthony Luciano’s Megan Hobo bag (eBay), Steve Madden’s tan ankle tie suede shoes, and a long pendant necklace from Kansas City designer Ngan Vuong.
blackjeans
I have a feeling this is going to be my uniform for Spring 2020: I just feel very chic when wearing this combination. Adding a pair of skinny black jeans, some heeled open toed Unisa booties (no longer available) and a black and crème Rebecca Minkoff Love bag (last season) creates a simple but strong statement–easily copied I think.winterlook
I can even wear my Cross-Over top in the winter! I added a thrifted cheetah scarf, a brown leather skirt (Poshmark), a pair of Rebecca Minkoff booties (old from her site) and my brown leather bag (years ago from T.J. Maxx). When it gets colder, I can throw on my thrifted (& made in the USA) camel jacket.
springsilklinen
My final style is for spring/summer. I’ve combined straw, wood and faux tortoise shell for a polished look. The oversized blue/tortoise/gold necklace, from T.J Maxx, is always a hard one to match with a top. But I think this goes very well. The clutch (optional cross-over bag) is a vintage Rodo from eBay and the sandals are second hand Martha Davis also from eBay. My wood/brass wide bangle is thrifted.
backinsert
Finally, I wanted to point out the attention to detail that Pauline gives her garments. The back of the Wrap-Over Top has a back neck yoke. This gives the top extra strength to support the layers of fabric in front. Being a seamstress myself, details like this suggest a well-thought out garment.

Wrapping It UP

The Cross-Over micro-model top is a multi-season winner. It’s price is $59.95. Being an affiliate of Covered Perfectly, my readers get a 20% discount. That makes it $47.96 and there is free shipping for orders over $47.00. Remember, all of Covered Perfectly is made in the USA.

If it doesn’t fit or you don’t like it, just return it within 45 days of purchase for a full refund or exchange.

As mentioned above, MeadowTree Style readers receive a 20% discount. Use the discount code MTS20 when you check out at Covered Perfectly. The discount will apply up to two items. Or you can take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free, any combination.

Thanks to Covered Perfectly for collaborating on this post. Pauline did provide me this top for my honest opinion and this post does contain affiliate links, which generates a few pennies for MeadowTree Style.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed my review and ideas for wearing this nicely versatile, flattering top that has such a luxurious feel to it. I might add that Pauline designs with us classically aged women in mind.

Take care, everyone. Until next time…stay creative.

Run over to Covered Perfectly to check out the all the new styles and some beautiful classic ones. If you fall in love with anything, don’t forget to use my code MTS20 for your discount.

What I’m Wearing For Valentine’s Day (Something New + Thrifted + Made by Yours Truly.)

Today’s post is a one hit wonder: just one styling idea for a Valentine’s Day dinner date. When I was blogging full time, I never wrote a Galentine/Valentine post. Now, that I’ve come back part-time, why not? Michael and I are meeting up with friends on Valentine’s Day this year and I’ve decided what to wear.

The main focal point is my new En Crème kimono from my good friend Debby’s shop What To Wear, which is on the town square in Butler, Missouri (about 50 miles south of Kansas City).

View1
The black in this kimono is flocked velvet which is off-set by a floral pattern in hues of purple, rose and magenta. I’m styling it semi-dressy (pants and flats). However, I’ve been thinking about styling it casually (maybe another post?).
View2VD
I’m using my “black column” for this look. The blacks in the top and pants don’t match perfectly so I separated them with a black belt. I made the black stretch knit pants a few years ago and the black shell was thrifted. Today, I have something new, something used and something made by me.

 Personalizing with  Accessories

VDFlatlay
I love accessories for making a personal statement and picked purple and black to coordinate with the top. The bag is one of Rebecca Minkoff’s  Love Bags and the metallic flats are by Marc Fisher. The Geode and bead necklace is by Kansas City artist Rita Uridge but the black bangles are thrifted. My Kate Spade bow belt was found used on eBay. The chunky amethyst ring is from Gemsporium, a jewelry designer out of Thailand that has a shop on eBay.

As I mentioned earlier, I found the Kimono at What To Wear. Debby doesn’t have any at the boutique at this very moment but she is expecting some for Spring. If you live in our area, keep watch (and I’ll let you know). Meanwhile, I went to Amazon and found a few that I like.

#1 Made By Johnny Women’s Short Sleeve Open Front Loose Kimono

#2 Hibluco Women’s Casual Printed Kimono Cardigan Sheer Tops Loose Blouse

#3 ECOWISH Womens Boho Irregular Long Sleeve Wrap Kimono

Are you up for some DIY? I always thought that this type of garment would be a great beginner’s sewing project; it is just rectangles. Googling “how to make kimonos” turns up many tutorials. I like this one for its clear illustrations and easy to follow instructions: Easy Sewing Kimono Tutorial by Lolly Jane.

Nailing It

zoyaGardner
Zoya is my go to “main stream” polish. How could I resist purple and blue metallic polish with the name “Gardner”-couldn’t and didn’t!

That’s it for today. See you Valentine’s Day on Instagram where I post my day to day outfits and other things going on.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you have a sweet Galentine’s/Valentine’s Day. And may you stay creative.

The Versatility of a Long Cardigan

I’ve always been a fan of long cardigans. They are versatile and can be styled from casual to dressy. This dark green (with underlying brown tones) August Silk cardigan is a new addition to my collection. Different lighting affects how this cardigan appears, but, believe me, it’s dark green.

It’s been fun experimenting with ways to style it and I wanted to share a couple of ideas with you today. Color-wise, both of the looks below rely on neutrals to complement the dark green.

Green1
I picked brown, camels and denim blue to create a casual look: a very comfortable outfit for a home improvement shopping trip with Michael. To complete this “shopping day” look, I used a tan Pendleton merino turtleneck (from eBay). I added American Eagle jeans and a very old pair of brown suede booties. Lately, I’ve often carried my vintage Louie Vuitton bag that I found on The RealReal and this day was no exception. If you are considering adding a luxury bag to your collection, I highly recommend exploring all the pre-loved at The RealReal.
SaturdayNight
Again, I used neutrals for a Saturday night out with Michael. However, they are walking on the wild side. The tiger printed shell was thrifted, and my black pants are smooth black denim from Nordstrum’s. The black and tan stripped flats are Francis Valentine (Kate Spade’s company before her untimely death). For special occasions, I like to bring out one of my beloved pre-love Anthony Luciano bags. This one was scored on eBay.

Bon Appétit!

bonapetite
I’ve discovered a new jewelry line; Lionette by Noa Sade. I’m wearing their Soho bracelet. I got a great deal for it on Black Friday.

This August Silk cardigan is an easy care 78% rayon and 28% nylon; just wash it in your gentle wash cycle. Also, being rayon and nylon makes it a three season piece.

I found my cardigan at a good friend’s boutique, What to Wear, on the central square in Butler, Missouri (about 50 miles south of Kansas City). I wasn’t able to find this exact cardigan online. However, I did find a few that were similar. Check out these links.

Something Else I’m Loving This Month

sugaredfig

I’ve become a fan of Pacifica Cosmetics, a 100% vegan makeup and skincare brand. I picked up a tube of their Color Quench Lip TintColor Quench Lip Tint in the color Sugared Fig at Whole Foods. I love it and also found quite a bit of Pacifica products at my Ulta last week.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed my ideas today…stay creative.

Mad About Plaid & Tunics

I’m pretty excited about a Karen Hart shirt/tunic that I just added to my closet. It’s fitted, long and flattering. With a full buttoned front, this top can be used for an extra layered look or just by itself. The sleeves (which are lined with another fabric) can be turned up (to show off bracelets) or left long for extra warmth.

Long shirt/tunics may be one of those style choices that can work well for adolescents to their grandmothers–even great-grandmothers. For casual/comfortable situations, long fitted shirts pose a chic and modern look.

Also, plaid is timeless. It has been a classic as far back as I can remember and never feels old. Easily a three season piece, this shirt/tunic will see many shopping trips and get- togethers with family friends.

View1plaid
For contrast, I added a black ChiChi 3/4 sleeve length, microfiber layering top. These come in many colors and are so handy. I paired my favorite denim high waisted jeggings by American Eagle.  After wearing this pair (constantly) I can understand why American Eagle jeans is America’s favorite brand. They are fantastic! The denim colored suede booties (Marc Fisher/two seasons ago) are about the same color as the jeans, making a smoother look . Also, notice the bias cut on the button band and pocket: another feature that caught my eye.
plaid3
I don’t know if it matters what bag you have to wear with a denim and plaid look. Today I simply chose a neutral colored bag that I really like: a 2nd hand LV bag from The RealReal.
outandabout
Cheers! The perfect outfit for meeting up with friends at our local wine bar.

I found this shirt at a good friend’s boutique, What to Wear, on the central square in county seat Butler, Missouri (about 50 miles south of Kansas City). I wasn’t able to find this exact Karen Hart shirt online. However, I did find a few that were similar: plaid shirt/tunics that are fitted and buttoned all the way down, nicely versatile features.

You might try these links. I especially love #3!

#1 Black & Red Plaid-$21.99 Amazon

#2 A bit shorter but comes in five different plaids. $59.95 from L.L.Bean

#3 Orange themed tunic-$59.99 from Soft Surroundings (on sale)

I wonder if anyone else has discovered the versatility of these long buttoned up tunics for women our age. Let me know if you have. I love them, especially ones in plaid.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed my post today…stay creative.

Until next time, Style on!

Terri

Last week, I had to say goodby to my beautiful and longtime companion, Sophia. With that, I needed some shopping therapy; hence the visit to my friend Debbie’s shop. In all, I came home with five new versatile pieces. Guess I will be blogging a little more because I have ideas for each piece.

Sophiadedication2
Dedicated to Sophia, my little style icon. She appeared in quite a few of my posts over the years. And yes, in photo three, we have outfits from the same fabric-life with a Poodle! Michael use to joke that she had more clothes than him.
